The DAX Companion Guide

(a work in-progress production)

DAX ia an acronym for data analysis expressions. It is a modeling and querying language used in Microsoft Power BI, Excel PowerPivot, and SQL Server Analysis Server (Tabular mode). The same data engine (branded xVelocity) is used in all three products (with some versioning differences). Power BI adoption is growing fast, Excel may be the most popular business application ever, and Analysis Server Tabular has been the focus of Microsoft's development effort in the business intelligence space the past several years. Clearly, the "Microsoft way" of doing business intelligence intersects with the tabular model, and DAX is the primary way to model and query the Tabular model.

This book is not a tutorial on using DAX. There are some great resources available for that already. This book is also not an advanced DAX book. Rather, the goal is to consolidate some (but not all) of the tricky parts of DAX, the places I had questions about or concepts that tripped me up when first learning DAX. And believe me, the learning process continues.

I hope you find this book useful. I welcome feedback, corrections, and even contributions to this book. And with that, let's begin.
